It is important to note that CSV stands for "Comma Separated Values" and is a method of encoding and not a strict file format. Here are the approximate steps for creating an empty file, editing it in an external editor and opening it back up in CHIRP:.

CSV files are generic, radio-independent text files. This means that you cannot upload them directly into a radio. In order to get the information into your device, you must go through some sort of an Import operation. There are two basic ways to do this, depending on what you are trying to accomplish:. This method should be used when you want to import the entire contents or some large portion of the CSV file into the destination radio.

Follow these steps:.

Good morning my love

This method should be used when you want selectively import a few memories from a CSV file into the destination radio. Sign in Register. Search :. Observe the following rules to ensure that CHIRP can continue to read the file: You must maintain the header row in its original format so that CHIRP knows which column corresponds to which value You may re-order the columns as long as the header row matches You may delete columns for which there are sane defaults and CHIRP will assume those defaults upon opening or importing the file You may place double quote marks i.

Follow these steps: Open a. Make sure that the tab at the top says something like "Yaesu FT" or "Icom IC" to indicate that you're operating on a radio-specific driver. An import dialog box will appear, which lets you preview the memories that can and will be imported.

Make your selections or corrections, if necessary, and then click OK. The memories stored in the CSV file should now be visible in your editor. The CSV file is generic and does not have all of the columns your radio may need.

See below. If you are using a live-mode radio, wait until all of the changes finish synchronizing back to the device by watching the status bar in the lower right corner of the main window. Open a. Make sure that the resulting tab at the top says something like "Yaesu FT" or "Icom IC" to indicate that you're operating on a radio-specific driver. You can select multiple rows by holding the Shift or Control keys while making your selections. The most frequent example of this is the missing "Power" column.

If your radio's "power" defaults to "low" then you probably want to change the setting to "high" for all channels. After you import the spreadsheet into the CHIRP window for your radio, you will need to change setting in the "power" column for all rows. Fortunately, CHIRP has a shortcut that lets you change one or more columns in all rows: Select relevant rows: Click on the first row Move to the last affected row and shift-click Right-click to get the convenience popup, and click on "properties" to bring up the properties menu Select the property "column" checkbox to change and select the new value for it from its dropdown e.

"Chirp" Image file for the Baofeng HH VHF

What kind of radio do I need to call in on logging roads? UV-5R is the cheapest most common option. Buy from wherever you see fit online or local Do I need a license to use these Baofeng radios? There is a couple different ways to use them so Yes and No 1.

If you only want to listen use as a scanner then no license whatsoever is required. If you want to transmit on a GMRS channel over 2 watts Most Baofengs are capable of Watts model dependent you require an amateur radio license from Industry Canada 4.

I DO NOT condone illegal radio activity but to be honest on a personal to personal level the chance of you ever getting caught for transmitting over proper power levels or on LADD and logging roads channels is very very low. These types of channels are monitored regularly by Industry Canada and it is so damn easy for them to pinpoint the exact location of your transmission that believe me they have and will come knockin! One last point. Is this enforced you asked? Once again, use it proper on proper channels and you should have no issues.

There is 2 ways to program a Baofeng. I lean to the latter way for this as its easy to punch in a massive amount of channels quickly. That being said you may end up on a road one day that requires the manual input of a new frequency so study up on how to do that as well.

This is a baseline for any user: 1. Follow the directions on this website to findout what type of USB programming cable you have and what type of driver you need to install. If you and your buddies own Baofengs please limit the power on the FRS channels to low because the poor bastards out there who own these terrible radios cant transmit any higher wattage so no sense in us stealing there channels.

MURS channels because they operate in the mhz range tend to work best in treed hilly areas so I imagine most people will prefer these or the GMRS. As you can see in the image below this is what i have started with for channels, most Baofengs can hold presets so this is the "Must Have" originals and now we need to start adding logging road specfic channels to here. Thanks duggyb.

You signed out in another tab or window.I have been playing around with some scripts to generate files which contain all useful UK repeaters on 70cm and can be imported straight into CHIRP. I will probably also do this for 2m repeaters, and maybe areas eg.

South, South East, etc but for now — this is my first shot. To do this you must have a radio file, or new file open. If you import these into an already open radio file, you can go ahead and upload back to your device.

If you import them into a new file, you may need to configure the file for your radio.

It is worth bearing in mind, these files also change radio settings, such as beeps, voice and screen colours. I have tried to make these settings as generic as possible, but you can please everyone — some people actually like the harsh announcement voice on these radios! I will not be held responsible for any damage caused to your radio, or computer while using these files. Please use with caution, and only if you know what you are doing!

It will enable basic downloading and uploading of frequencies and settings from and to the radio. In later posts we will have a more in-depth look at al the settings available. Disclaimer: this documentation is for educational purposes only.

For operating this radio you are most likely required to be a licensed radio amateur or own a commercial licence. Be sure to check the rules and regulations in your area first. Together with the scanning capabilities, this makes the UV-5R also a basic but useful scanning radio. And for that price, the radio even comes with a wrist strap, battery and charger included. For connecting the radio to the PC I used this generic, cheap Kenwood-style serial cable. Just plug in the cable and Windows and Linux will recognize it.

CHIRP is a free, open-source tool for programming amateur radios. It supports many manufacturers and models, as well as provides a way to interface with multiple data sources and formats.

Turn radio off; 2. Make sure connector is firmly connected; 4. Ensure that the radio is tuned to channel with no activity; 6.

Click OK to download image from device. You can edit it and save multiple versions to disk, or upload an image back to your tranceiver. You can even adjust a quite few settings that are not available through the keypad and LCD screen. You can only upload an image to a tranceiver with a matching firmware version.

To be continued! Thank you very much for providing your information. If not, is that by design or just not coded yet? This guy had some sort of Kenwood cable. And must of been able to find a driver for that cable. I have seen other pages that tell you to roll back the driver to 3. You need to get an old Win XP or Win 7 machine. There are different cables with different chipsets. As you can read in my blog post, the cable I described with CH chipset definately works with Windows I have been using it for a long time now without any problems.

Also, make sure you do not use a USB hub and you tune your radio to an inactive frequency when transferring data. One checks the Device Manager to see if the cable was recognized, and one can confirm the COM port and driver if any assigned. The specific version of the chip can also make a major difference on whether or not Win8 and above will recognize it.

Some cable manufacturers do provide specific drivers for their cable. Worked on the first try. Thanks for sharing your experiences, I will add your solution to the blog post.

Worked when it was new six months ago, so I am not sure I am doing differently or wrong this time.It makes sense that your handheld radio should be able to take the place of multiple radios.

Want to add all the channels you need quickly and easily? The Baofeng handheld radios are inexpensive but cover many frequencies, making them the Swiss Army Knives of the budget ham radio community.

CHIRP is free open source software anyone can download. It can cover a multitude of channels and frequencies. In this post w. That is quite a list of frequencies. Be sure you buy a cable from a reputable dealer and not a cheap knock off, or you will risk frying something. Once this step has been completed, it should list any channels that you have already programmed into memory. If there is confusion on this, you can find which models are covered and which you should pick on the CHIRP website.

Some options available may be RadioReference. RepeaterBook is the easiest way to import repeater info for your location. To proceed, click none under the Duplex column for frequency you want to disable TX.

Then select off from the drop down box. This will ensure you never accidentally TX on these channels, while still allowing you to receive. Step 4 Now you just have to upload this config back to your radio. Use the same configuration settings that were used during the initial clone we did above. I believe Baofeng has a 7watt radio not sure of the model. I currently use a Baofeng Uv-5r on the fire department I work on, this is a great little talk and receive radio.

I did get the extended battery and it lasts a long time. I also monitor nearby towns as well. I was impressed with it even more. Have not ordered a shoulder mic yet. You need the older prolific driver for vista it works on windows 10 it is version 3. I have a boafeng gt3 tp. It will not transmit on gmrs. I own 2 others and transmit fine. If I enter other freq it transmits fine. Any ideas or suggest will be awesome. The UV-5R Series 3 has 8 watt broadcast power.

It says under the battery. The Uv5r is not compatible with my series 3.There are a variety of hand held radios on the market. One of the most prolific manufacturers is a Chinese company who makes very inexpensive some might even say cheap radios marketed under the names of Baofeng and BTech. Another popular maker along these lines is Wouxun. It has versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux, although for this article we are going to focus on Windows.

Now if you were like me, and installed CHIRP, plugged in the cable, and hooked it to your radio, you probably got a lot of error messages. Inside the programming cable are some chips that help the computer talk to the radio. The company who originally created these chips was called Prolific. These Chinese companies cloned the chips and their code, indeed the cables even report to Windows that they are from Prolific. Which is where the problems start. Prolific was naturally a tad upset that someone had stolen their design, and who can blame them?

You can verify this for yourself. If you are on an older version of Windows you can open up Device Manager through the Administration panel. Note that it has a big yellow exclamation mark. Right in the middle under Device Status we see the problem: This device cannot start. Code The solution then is to install the most recent version that works. Fortunately someone has made that very easy to do.

Programming Your Baofeng Radio with Chirp and Solving the Prolific Driver Issue

In addition, they have a tiny program you can download and install that will uninstall the nonfunctional version of the Prolific driver, and install the last version that actually worked.

Even more important, their app will prevent Windows from automatically updating the driver in the future. Note they have versions of their program for both the 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows, and it will run on Windows XP, 7, 8, 8.

chirp image files

Just download and run, reboot, then return to Device Manager. Your Prolific driver should now appear without the exclamation mark, indicating it is now working. Open up CHIRP, then plug in your cable, and with the radio off plug it into your radio, and then turn the radio on. CHIRP opens up with a big blank screen. Next it wants to know what COM port the cable is using, who made the radio, and what model. I also want to add a quick note for eagle eyed viewers. Again you can use device manager, like I did, to determine what the correct COM port is for your computer, and if you use multiple computers your COM port may be different on each.

Once done just click OK. Basically, turn the radio off, hook it to the computer using the cable, then turn it on.
